In 2018, Hurricane Florence came thru our area and destroyed much of the farm including our house, barn, and most of our possessions. Many of the beehives had been thrown around the farm leaving them defenseless. After the storm passed, we frantically worked to put them back together and save what we could. The most devastating part came over the following weeks as we saw their numbers dwindle by the day. The storm also destroyed the natural nectar and pollen sources in the surrounding area forcing the bees to fly further from the farm to find what they needed. The state had to spray for mosquitos after the hurricane due to health concerns and the out-of-control mosquito population. Our farm is organic, and the neither the state or county spray anywhere near our farm however, as the bees were forced to fly further, they were exposed to the poison.
The initial concept for Southport Lavender Farm was to supply our apiary with a nutritious nectar source and to keep them from venturing out too far. The research showed that Lavender is resistant to deer, rabbit and many pests; and the best part was that bees LOVE lavender.
We started small with only a few test strips. As we were talking with friends, the aha moment came as the enthusiasm grew about a lavender farm at the beach. Since we had a clean slate to start with, Southport Lavender Farm was launched.
The lavender is growing rapidly, the bees are thriving and we are plowing forward with new projects. In the spring of 2023, we are planting three new fields with varieties of Grosso Lavender, Phenomenal Lavender and Hidcote Blue Lavender. We have plans for an Air B&B set in a field of lavender and one on our lakefront.
We hope you will join us whether for an hour, a day or a
week in the upcoming Air B&B’s
